May 22, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Five UNLV baseball players earned 2013 All-Mountain West honors as the league announced its all-conference teams on Wednesday. The awards were voted on by the league's six head coaches.

Junior Buddy Borden was selected as the MW Co-Pitcher of the year with Nevada, Reno’s Braden Shipley. Borden sported a perfect 6-0 record in conference and had the lowest overall earned run average in the league with a 2.19.

“I’m excited for Buddy. He has really progressed this season and it is a great honor for him,” head coach Tim Chambers said. “Buddy was the only undefeated pitcher in conference play and had a shot to win the award out right. He worked really hard his first two years and this season he has turned the corner. I am very proud of him.”

Borden and Rebel senior outfielder Brandon Bayardi earned first-team honors while junior Patrick Armstrong, senior Mark Shannon and sophomore T.J. White earned second-team honors.

“I am certainly happy for Brandon to get first-team honors, but more importantly I’m happy that he is going out a winner,” Chambers said. “He is on a winning team that was picked fifth by the other coaches coming into the year and we finished second to a good New Mexico squad. I’m really excited for all of our guys too, but I think they would all trade the individual honors for a championship ring at the end of the weekend and that is what we are here to do.”

Bayardi was both a 2011 and 2012 All-MW honorees, while the other four are first-time recipients.

White led the Rebels in batting average during conference play this season at .349. In 27 games played he had nine doubles, one triple 18 RBI and 28 runs scored.

Bayardi led the Rebels and tied for first in the MW with seven home runs during conference play. He batted a .322 over 30 games with 10 doubles, 23 RBI and 27 runs scored.

Armstrong led the team with a .393 overall batting average and hit .337 in conference games. He hit four home runs, seven doubles, 22 RBI and scored 17 runs in 29 MW games.

Shannon hit .309 in 30 conference games and led the Rebels with seven stolen bases. He hit three home runs, one triple, nine doubles and scored 29 runs during the MW season.

New Mexico senior catcher Mitchell Garver and junior third baseman DJ Peterson were named Co-Players of the Year, for the second consecutive year. Fresno State’s Blake Quinn and New Mexico’s Sam Haggerty were named Co-Freshmen of the Year and UNM's Ray Birmingham was awarded Coach of the Year.
