May 22, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV junior Buddy Borden has been selected as a semifinalist for the inaugural Gregg Olson Award, presented by Toolshed Sports.
"Our pitching coach Stan Stolte and I would both tell you that the talent level was there with Buddy," head coach Tim Chambers said. "He has a big time pitchers body and he has matured a lot over the last two years after a tough freshman season. Buddy deserves everything he has gotten. He has worked hard for it and has really matured as a player."
Borden came into the season with a career 6.54 ERA and a 3-7 record. This season he moved up in to the Saturday starting pitcher role and sports a 2.19 ERA, which is the lowest in the Mountain West and has an 8-1 record in a team-high 94.2 innings pitched. He was also named the Co-Mountain Pitcher of the Year by the conference earlier today.
"His confidence is what has made him better this season. He is so much more confident in his game," associate head coach and pitching coach Stan Stolte said. "He has always has had good stuff, but he has never had the command like he has had this season. In the past when he would get into trouble, it would snowball into worse things. This season, every time he has gotten into a little trouble, he would find a way to pitch out of it."
Through hard work, strength of mind and determination, forty-six players have made the list to honor college baseball's "Breakout Player of the Year".
The award is named after former Auburn Tiger star pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All American, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All Star.
Like Olson, these players have elevated their game to an elite level and in many instances their team has mirrored their success as a direct result.
A list of finalists is scheduled to be announced on Monday, June 3rd in conjunction with the conclusion of NCAA Regional play. The winner of the 2013 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park from June 15-June 25/26. 2013.
