Austin House Selected in MLB Draft

June 6, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico junior pitcher Austin House was selected by the Oakland A's in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday. He was the only Lobo selected.

"It feels good," the Albuquerque-native said of being drafted. "I went through it in high school, but it's a little bit different this time. I was drafted by a West Coast team this time, which I like."

House was selected out of La Cueva High School by the Boston Red Sox in the 25th round of the 2009 MLB draft, but chose to play for the Lobos instead.

This season the powerful right-hander came into his own for the Lobos. He led the team with 111 2/3 innings pitched, three complete games, and two shutouts. He posted a 2.74 ERA, which led all UNM starters, and struck out 91 batters to earn All-Mountain West first team honors. He held opponents to a .252 batting average, allowed only two home runs all season, and allowed zero or one earned run in seven of his 16 starts.

He was also named to the Mountain West Tournament team for his dominating performance in UNM's 13-0 victory over UNLV. He went all nine innings and struck out seven to earn the win.

In the NCAA Los Angeles Regional House collected UNM's only win, pitching seven shutout innings in the Lobos' 4-0 victory over San Diego. He finished the season on a 17 1/3 scoreless inning streak and won his final three starts.

UNM head coach Ray Birmingham has enjoyed watching House progress over the past three years.

"I'm so proud of that kid," he said. "He's a New Mexico kid. He's a kid that pitched very limited time in high school, but I believed in him. He had a growing process as a freshman and sophomore, but now he's a junior and he's everything I hoped he would be."

House said he hadn't made a decision on whether he was going to turn pro or return to UNM for his senior season yet.

"I have to talk to my parents first, figure out what we want to do, and go from there," he said.

Drafted players have until 3 p.m. (MT) on July 13 to sign.
