COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A new standard was set on Thursday night as three Mountain West baseball student-athletes were selected in Round 1 of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. New Mexico corner infielder DJ Peterson was the No. 12 pick overall by the Seattle Mariners, the second-highest pick in MW history. Right-hander Braden Shipley of Nevada followed three spots later at the No. 15 selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The New York Yankees made Fresno State outfielder Aaron Judge the No. 32 pick overall.

Peterson, Shipley and Judge became the fifth, sixth and seventh First Round draft picks in Mountain West baseball history. Royce Ring, a left-handed pitcher for San Diego State, was the league's first Round 1 pick in 2002 at No. 18 overall by the Chicago White Sox. TCU righty Andrew Cashner was the next First Round selection at No. 19 in 2008 by the Chicago Cubs. A year later, the league saw San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg become a No. 1 overall pick by the Washington Nationals. Former two-time MW Player of the Year C.J. Cron of Utah was the No. 17 pick for the Los Angeles Angels in 2011.

The Mountain West ended up with 22 picks over the 40 rounds, tying for the third-most selections in league history.
