New Mexico's Peterson, Garver Named NCBWA All-Americans

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico teammates and 2012 Mountain West Co-Players of the Year DJ Peterson and Mitchell Garver have been named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Americans, as announced on Wednesday. Peterson, a sophomore third baseman, was a first-team honoree while Garver, a junior catcher, was selected to the third team. The Mountain West was one of 11 conferences to be represented by multiple individuals.
Peterson ranked among the top 10 nationally with a .419 batting average (6th), 17 home runs (10th) and 78 RBIs (2nd) in 2012, leading the Mountain West in all three categories to win the league's triple crown. The Gilbert, Ariz., native also topped the MW and was among the NCAA's top 10 in hits (104/2nd) and slugging (.734/2nd) and on-base (.490/7th) percentage. In addition to earning Louisville Slugger First Team All-American accolades, Peterson was also a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award.
Garver led the league and ranked among the top 10 nationally in doubles (27/4th) and runs scored (68/7th) this season. The Albuquerque, N.M., product also ranked second in the Conference in both hitting (.377) and slugging percentage (.612), hits (101/6th nationally) and RBIs (57), and fourth in on-base percentage (.438). Garver, a 2012 Louisville Slugger Third-Team All-American honoree, is one of three finalists for this year's Johnny Bench Award, which will be announced June 28.
