Record 16 Lobos Named Academic All-Mountain West
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Mountain West released it's Spring 2013 Academic All-Conference Team Thursday and 16 University of New Mexico baseball players were honored, which breaks the previous program record of 12 set in 2008.
"It speaks volumes about what we do here at the University of New Mexico," head coach Ray Birmingham said. "We put what's important first here. We won the community service award, we have a record number of Academic All-Conference players, we've been ranked nationally and we're winning conference championships. Every aspect of UNM baseball speaks of excellence."
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
The Lobo players honored were Alex Allbritton, Kevin Baumgartner, Drew Bridges, Luke Campbell, A.J. Carman, Anthony Consiglio, Jonathan Cuellar, Taylor Duree, Alex Estrella, Mitch Garver, Sam Haggerty, Chase Harris, Jared Holley, Logan Lippert, Josh Melendez and Sam Wolff.
"I'm as proud of this as I am of us winning any championship," Birmingham said.
Garver and Allbritton, the only four-year seniors on the team in 2013, were both four-time Academic All-Mountain West honorees. Dusty Young (2000-03) was the only previous four-time winner in program history. Campbell and Melendez were also previously named Academic All-Conference in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
Overall, UNM had 111 student-athletes honored in the spring and finished the academic year with 163 total honorees, both of which led the Mountain West.
