Three Lobos Land in Top Prospects List

Nov. 26, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico has become known for producing Major League Baseball talent as it has had 14 players drafted, and several others signed as free agents, since 2008, and next year's draft should be no different.

PerfectGame.org recently released its Top 300 prospect list for the 2013 draft and three Lobos made the cut.

Junior third baseman DJ Peterson is ranked as a first round-talent, coming in at No. 20 overall. He is 14th among college players on the list, and fifth among college position players. He had a monster season last year on his way to being named Co-Mountain West Player of the Year and receiving numerous All-America honors.

Junior pitcher Jake McCasland, a flame-throwing right-handed pitcher, is the next Lobo ranked, coming in at No. 217 overall. He was named New Mexico's High School Player of the Year coming out of Piedra Vista High School in Farmington, N.M. in 2011. This year he should be a huge part of the Lobo pitching staff as he works to improve upon his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Senior catcher Mitch Garver is the third Lobo on the list. One of only three national finalists for the Johnny Bench Award last season, he shared Mountain West Player of the Year honors with Peterson and was also named to several All-America teams. He is ranked No. 231 overall and, like McCasland, is projected to be taken in the top 10 rounds.

Note: Peterson is also ranked in MLB.com's Top 50 2013 Prospect Watch. He is ranked 29th and projected to be drafted in the first round. More information is available here.
