MBB Postgame Quotes - SDSU at Air Force
Feb. 18, 2012
Postgame quotes following the San Diego State at Air Force mwn's basketball game on Feb. 18.
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
"It's hard to win anywhere, especially on the road. And it is especially hard when you shoot it as poorly as we did. I'm sure Air Force had a lot to do with it, but we have to be able be able to make plays and finish plays. We had multiple times in the first half when we threw the ball in the post, got fouled and it looked like we were going to make the basket. Then not only did we not make the basket, but ended up missing the free throws too. You have to be able to make important plays."
"The one guy that did that for them repeatedly was (Michael) Lyons and everyone in the building knew it. We allowed him to get away from us on two threes in the first half. We did a very poor job of how we defended it. Then he had two in the second half of the same consequence. In the first half it was younger guys, in the second half it was our vet guys. They (Air Force) made plays and got the separation and we couldn't quite get it down to what we needed to ... to come back and put it in overtime or get a buzzer beater to win it."
Air Force Head Coach Dave Pilipovich
"How about those players?! I'm so happy for them."
"We controlled tempo and defended for the most part. This is a great afternoon."
"It makes these kids happier and hungry, knowing night in and night out that we can play with anybody as long as we play Air Force basketball and that's taking good shots, passing up good shots for better shots and defending on the other end and playing as a unit."
"You know we may not win another game, but we're going to work on Monday and we're going to work on Tuesday and come Wednesday we're going to play hard against TCU. You can't ask for a better group of kids."
"We started to get a little tired. We talk about fresh legs and we started settling for jump shots. So we talked about attacking the basket and Max Yon was the first to get a drive. We wanted to put them on their heels and if we didn't get a layup we wanted to kick if out."
On what you told the kids during the last media timeout.
"We're going to win this game. We've put ourselves in position to win this game. This is what we need right here, handling pressure full court, attack the middle and when they foul us we need to be strong with the ball and make free throws. Just positive, we're winning this game, it's what we do."
"We talked about it with our guys (record vs. ranked teams) and we told them that we're talented enough and that we play our game and play together we're pretty darn good. Let's challenge them and see what we can do."
Air Force Junior Guard Michael Lyons
"It's an amazing feeling. Coach got a shower with water. Everybody is on a high right now."
"This gives us a lot of confidence to know that we can play with everybody. We now know that not only can we play with them, but we can beat them."
Air Force Junior Center Taylor Broekhuis
"Everyone is really happy right now. This is something that doesn't happen that often here and it should be celebrated."
"Before the game Coach P had the score of the game from 1992 (last win vs. ranked team) and he told us today was the day we make history."
Air Force Freshman Guard Max Yon
"This is an unbelievable feeling. Being out there late in the game with a ranked team. I had chills throughout my body. It was great being out there. I just tried to play with confidence."
"This gives us a lot of confidence, but we've had that confidence after beating Wyoming. We knew we could beat this team, we really believed it."
