AUSTIN --- Down in the heart of Texas, the Fresno State men's basketball team gave the 24th-ranked Longhorns nearly all they could handle before falling 55-53 in the closing seconds of a hard-fought season opener Friday night at the Erwin Center.

In a game that featured 12 ties, the Bulldogs led by as many as five early in the second half.

Texas' Sheldon McClelland scored a game-best 20 points, including a perfect 14-for-14 clip at the free throw line, to help the Longhorns outlast the 'Dogs in the possession-by-possession battle.

The `Dogs were led by freshman guard Marvelle Harris, who tallied a team-high 11 points, and nine points each from guards Tyler Johnson and Allen Huddleston.

Fresno State clearly valued the basketball with a 13-7 advantage in the turnover battle, but more importantly scored 16 points on those turnovers while shutting down Texas' transition game for most of the night as the Horns scored just one basket off a Bulldog turnover.

Fresno State (0-1) will play five more games against teams ranked in a preseason Top 25 national poll - No. 13/13 UCLA (away), No. 18/19 UNLV (home/away) and No. 20/20 San Diego State (home/away).

The Bulldogs close out their season-opening road trip on Wednesday night when they visit UC Riverside. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. PT and can be heard live on KMJ 580 AM.
