FRESNO, Calif. --- During the 2012 fall signing period, Fresno State head men's basketball coach Rodney Terry inked Paul Watson, Alex Davis and Soma Edo to National Letters of Intent to join the Bulldogs' program starting in the 2013-14 academic year.
"We are very excited about the addition of three future Bulldogs to our University and basketball program," Terry said. "Paul Watson, Alex Davis, and Soma Edo are all the type of student athletes that our program will continue to recruit as we continue to build this program - high character young men that have the opportunity to be very good basketball players here at Fresno State. From a pure basketball stand point, our staff and I know we have added talent, size, and athleticism with the addition of Paul, Alex, and Soma."
All three add length and athleticism that is expected to help the 'Dogs compete in the Mountain West, which is currently the No. 2 league in the country in conference RPI and owns the nation's best composite non-conference record.
Watson, a 6-7 small forward/wing, received strong reviews for his length and 3-point range as a player with incredible potential as an incoming freshman next season. As a junior last season, he averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game for Paradise Valley High School.
"The size and athleticism that Paul Watson will bring to the perimeter is something we are looking forward to over the course of his career," Terry said. "A big guard/wing is a position we wanted to solidify as we move forward, and we're excited to have Paul as a part of our program. He is a great kid with an opportunity to be a special player.
Davis, a 6-9 forward, was Scout.com's No. 47 power forward out of high school in 2010 with offers from Arkansas, Colorado State, Houston and SMU before deciding to play his first two collegiate seasons at Hutchinson Community College. In his freshman season, he averaged 10.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game for the Blue Dragons, and has upped those numbers to an average of 13.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game while leading HCC to a 14-0 record so far in his sophomore season.
"Alex Davis will provide our program with much needed experience, toughness, and versatility inside and out," Terry said. "He's hungry and excited to have the opportunity to continue his collegiate career at Fresno State and in the Mountain West. He will bring scoring and defense in the paint, as well as on the perimeter as this team develops next season."
Edo, a 6-6 versatile wing/forward, is widely regarded as one of the best all-around athletes in the nation with an unrivaled ability to jump, dunk and change the dynamics of the game. Edo, a native of Richardson, Texas, is prepping at Berkner High School, who he helped lead to a 20-6 record last year, and will join the Bulldogs as a freshman next season.
"Soma Edo is without a doubt one of the elite athletes in the country," Terry said. "His pure athleticism is as good as I've seen as a college coach, and we are looking forward to Soma being in a Bulldog uniform. The physical gifts he possesses cannot be taught, and as he continues to develop and combine those tools with his improving skill level, Soma Edo will be a difference maker in our league."
Fresno State begins its debut season in the Mountain West on Wednesday when the 'Dogs host No. 19/17 San Diego State at 8:30 p.m. PT. All fans are asked to red as part of the special RED OUT promotion.
