Jan. 10, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball freshman forward Anthony Bennett is on The John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list, which was announced Thursday by The Los Angeles Athletic Club on ESPNU.
Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, the list is made up of 25 student-athletes who, based on their performances in November, December, and the beginning of January, are the frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.
Bennett, who is one of only three freshmen and two Mountain West players to make the list, leads the Runnin' Rebels and the MW in scoring at 19.4 ppg, which ranks 25th nationally and second among all freshmen. The former McDonald's High School All-American has scored in double figures in all 16 of UNLV's games, including nine with at least 20 points. He has led the Runnin' Rebels in scoring in 14 games, including 13 of the last 14, and he has recorded seven double-doubles this season, including three in his last four games.
Bennett also leads the team and is fourth in the league in rebounding with 8.9 rpg, while his field-goal percentage of 55.8 is tops of the team and second in the MW. In addition, he has averaged 1.44 blocks per game, which also leads the team and is third in the conference.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the official ballot. The National Ballot consists of approximately 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
The Wooden Award All-American Team, consisting of the nation's top 10 players, will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year presented by Wendy's will be announced on ESPN during the Final Four Weekend in Atlanta. The 2013 Wooden Award Gala presented by Wendy's will take place April 11-13, 2013, at The Los Angeles Athletic Club. The Gala will honor the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners, All-Americans and Legends of Coaching Award winner, Kansas Head Coach Bill Self.
Larry Johnson is UNLV's only winner of the Wooden Award (1991). Current Runnin' Rebel junior forward Mike Moser was on last year's midseason top 25 list.
San Diego State's Jamaal Franklin is the other representative on this year's list from a Mountain West school, while the other freshmen are Ben McLemore of Kansas, and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State.
The No. 24/19 Runnin' Rebels (13-3, 0-1 MW) will host Air Force at the Thomas & Mack Center for its Mountain West home opener this Saturday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. It is Kids Night with a festival to be held in the Cox Pavilion from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., and $10 tickets to the game are available for kids 12-and-under (with the purchase of an adult ticket at regular price).
