The Air Force men’s basketball team travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to take on the nationally-ranked UNLV Runnin’ Rebels on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip-off at the Thomas & Mack Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PT). Air Force improved to 9-4 after winning its conference opener, 78-65, against Nevada Wednesday at Clune Arena. UNLV fell to 13-3 with a 65-60 loss at New Mexico in its league opener on Wednesday.
Air Force Captures Third Straight Conference Opener
With their 7-65 victory over Nevada on Wednesday, the Falcons have won three straight conference openers and are now 9-24 all-time in conference openers. They were 2-17 in conference openers in their 19 years in the Western Athletic Conference, with the two victories coming against San Diego State (86-75) in 1986-87 and Colorado State (69-58) in 1992-93. Air Force is 7-7 in conference openers since the Mountain West began play in 1999.
Air Force Still With Only Two Wins Against Ranked Teams
With its 78-61 loss to #14/11 Florida on Dec. 29, Air Force fell to 2-77 against ranked opponents in program history. The Falcons also dropped an 89-74 decision to 23rd-ranked Colorado on Nov. 25. The two victories came against No. 21 UTEP (75-72) on Feb. 15, 1992 and No. 13 San Diego State (58-56) on Feb. 18, 2012.
9-4 Ties Sixth-Best Start Ever
Air Force’s 9-4 record ties the sixth-best start ever in program history after 13 games. The Falcons have been 12-1 twice in the past (2005-06 and `06-07), 11-2 once (2003-04) and 10-3 twice (1957-58 and ‘61-62). This is the sixth time at 9-4, most recently last season.
The Falcons travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to take on the Colorado State Rams on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Moby Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Michael Lyons Moves Into Top 10 on Career Scoring List
Senior Michael Lyons moved into ninth place on Air Force’s career scoring list with 19 points against Richmond on Jan. 2. He became the 23rd player in Air Force history to reach the 1,000-point plateau against Army in the season opener. Lyons, who entered the season with 997 career points, sank a three-pointer 2:16 into the game to join the prestigious club. The last Falcon to join the 1,000-point club was Matt McCraw in 2007. Lyons has 1,235 career points.
First Century Mark This Century
With its 102-68 victory over Western State on Nov. 15, Air Force hit the 100-point mark for the first time since Feb. 16, 1999 (111-88 victory over Denver). It was the 18th time Air Force has hit the century mark in program history.
All Four Losses to Winning Teams
The four teams that have defeated Air Force this season have a combined 48-12 record (.800 winning percentage). Wichita State is 15-1, Colorado is 11-4, Florida is 11-2 and Richmond is 11-5. Colorado and Florida were ranked at the time Air Force played them and Wichita State entered the Top 25 the week after defeating the Falcons.
Most Assists in One Game Since 1997
Air Force had 26 assists in its victory over Western State on Nov. 15, the most in one game since a school-record 36 against Doane on Nov. 22, 1997. Todd Fletcher dished out a game-high eight, one shy of his career high. The Falcons also posted 25 assists, including six by Fletcher, against Montana State.
In addition, the Falcons’ five turnovers vs. WSCU were the fewest in one game since a school-record three against Wyoming on March 8, 2007.
Nine Opponents Played in Postseason Last Year
Nine of Air Force’s 22 opponents this season played in a postseason tournament last year
Todd Fletcher in Sixth Place on Career Assist List
Senior Todd Fletcher moved into sixth place on AFA’s career assist list against Jackson State on Nov. 28. Fletcher, who is ranked third in the Mountain West with 4.08 assists per game, dished out a season-high eight against Western State on Nov. 15 and has 302 for his career.
Lyons No. 2 in the Mountain West in Scoring
Michael Lyons is second in the Mountain West in scoring at 18.3 points per game. Lyons, who scored a career-high 33 against Citadel on Nov. 11, is ranked sixth in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (2.08) and 3-point percentage (35.5%) and seventh in field-goal percentage at 44.4 percent (79-of-178).
Still a Solid Record at Clune
Including their 6-1 record this season, the Falcons have been hard to beat at Clune Arena the last nine-plus seasons. Since the beginning of the 2003-04 season, Air Force has won 111 of its 148 home games, good for a .750 winning percentage. In addition, the Falcons have won 42 of their 72 Mountain West games at Clune during that same stretch (.583 pct).
Two Road Wins Before Christmas - A Rarity
With its 61-53 victory at UC Riverside on Dec. 22, Air Force had two road wins before Christmas for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The Falcons also won at The Citadel on Nov. 11. In fact, Air Force has had two road wins before Christmas just seven times in program history.
Todd Fletcher 10th in Nation in Assist-Turnover Ratio
Senior point guard Todd Fletcher leads the Mountain West and is ranked No. 10 in the nation in assist-turnover ratio at 3.53. Fletcher, who led the nation in that category the last three weeks, has 53 assists and 15 turnovers in 13 games this season. In addition, senior Michael Lyons is 45th nationally in scoring at 18.3 points per game.
70 Points Seems to be the Key
Air Force is 7-1 this season when it scores 70 points or more and 2-3 when scoring less than 70. The two wins are against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (65-49) and UC Riverside (61-53).
Defensively speaking, the Falcons are a perfect 8-0 when allowing 70 points or less and 1-4 when allowing more than 70. The only victory was an 86-72 triumph over Montana State.
