JJ O'Brien Named MW Player of the Week

Jan. 28, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State men's basketball sophomore forward JJ O'Brien has been named Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

O'Brien earns his first career weekly honor after helping SDSU post the only 2-0 record inside Mountain West action last week as the Aztecs won by 21-point margins at Nevada and vs. then-No. 15/17 New Mexico at home.

The forward started his 39th and 40th straight games and averaged 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 blocks, 0.5 steals and had a assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.0, while shooting 66.7 percent from the field (10-for-15).

At Nevada, the 6-7 forward received the starting nod at point guard and responded with a season-high 12 points, including two just before the halftime buzzer to give San Diego State the lead, on 4-of-5 shooting and 4-of-7 from the free-throw line. Like his point total, his four free-throws marked a season high and equaled the same amount of free-throws made in his previous five games combined. O'Brien also added two assists and committed zero turnovers as SDSU stopped a two-game skid.

Against conference leader New Mexico, O'Brien started at point guard again and scored a season-high 12 points for a second straight game. His two-game double-figure scoring effort marked the first time he accomplished the feat as an Aztec and the second time overall. His impact, however, was felt on the boards and on defense against UNM's big frontcourt. O'Brien completed his first double-double as an Aztec (third overall) with a season-high 10 rebounds, a season-high seven of which came off the offensive glass. O'Brien, who routinely guarded the Lobos' post players, accounted for seven of SDSU's 13 offensive rebounds and he single-handily collected more offensive boards than New Mexico as a whole (7-6). In addition to shooting 6-for-10 from the floor, the sophomore also contributed two assists, a team- and season-high two blocks and one steal.

O'Brien's award marks the second time in three weeks an Aztec has been named the league player of the week. Jamaal Franklin shared the award on Jan. 14, which gave San Diego State its first weekly honor of the 2012-13 campaign.

Following its 2-0 week, SDSU returned to the Associated Press Top 25 coming in at No. 22. In the coaches' poll, meanwhile, the Aztecs jumped five spots to No. 20. San Diego State returns to action on Saturday when it plays at Air Force (Noon PT, Time Warner Cable SportsNet).
