Las Vegas Mayor Proclaims 'UNLV Rebel Red Friday'

Feb. 8, 2012

LAS VEGAS ( - Saturday's Runnin' Rebel game at the Thomas & Mack Center is "officially" one of the biggest home games in the program's recent history. And that is according to Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, who is urging all citizens to wear red on Friday to support UNLV.

No. 14/16 UNLV faces No. 13/14 San Diego State this Saturday at 1 p.m.

Earlier this morning, Goodman announced that she has officially proclaimed this Friday "UNLV Rebel Red Day" in Las Vegas. She made the announcement on 98.5 FM's Chet Buchanan and The Morning Zoo show. Buchanan is in his sixth season serving as the on-court emcee during Runnin' Rebel games.

The official proclamation from the office of the Mayor reads:

Whereas; the Runnin' Rebels are enjoying the best start to a season in almost two decades under first-year head coach and former Runnin' Rebel player Dave Rice; and

Whereas; UNLV has been nationally ranked for more weeks this season than in any season since 1992-93 and has enjoyed its highest ranking this season since the 1992-93 campaign; and

Whereas; the Runnin' Rebels had 20 wins before February this season for the first time since 1987; and

Whereas; Las Vegans love their Runnin' Rebels and will be the critical SIXTH MAN in Saturday's game vs. No. 13 San Diego State at the Thomas & Mack Center - the most-anticipated UNLV regular season home game in nearly 20 years; now

Therefore; I, the Mayor of the City of Las Vegas, County of Clark, State of Nevada, hereby proclaim February 10, 2012 as "UNLV Rebel Red Day" in the City of Las Vegas and urge all citizens to proudly wear red in honor of our Runnin' Rebels.

UNLV's Alumni Association and Athletic Department also urges alumni and fans to make every Friday a "UNLV Rebel Red Day."
