Feb. 13, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -

The UNLV (22-4) men's basketball team, which moved into a three-way tie atop the Mountain West standings after knocking off San Diego State over the weekend, also received a significant bump in the rankings on Monday.

The Runnin’ Rebels rose three spots in the Associated Press poll to No. 11 and five spots to a season-high 11th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll.

UNLV was also No. 11 in the AP’s poll on Jan. 30, which represented its highest placement in either poll since sitting No. 10 in the coaches' poll on Feb. 8, 1993.

The Runnin' Rebels are 3-2 this year against ranked opponents. UNLV defeated then-No. 1 North Carolina on Nov. 26, lost at then-No. 14/16 Wisconsin on Dec. 10, defeated then-No. 19 Illinois on Dec. 17 in Chicago, lost at then-No. 22 San Diego State on Jan. 14 and just defeated the then-No. 13/14 Aztecs.

North Carolina (8/7), San Diego State (13/15) and Wisconsin (15/17) are all ranked this week as is Wichita State (24/RV), which handed UNLV its first loss of the season on Dec. 4. UNLV also has victories vs. three teams receiving votes in this week's coaches' poll: New Mexico, Nevada, Reno and California. The Runnin’ Rebels’ only loss to a team that is not ranked this week was a two-point defeat at Wyoming on Feb. 4.

UNLV, which is 14-0 at home for the first time since 1991-92, plays a pair of road games this week, starting at TCU on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. PT on The Mtn. Head coach Dave Rice's team will then travel to New Mexico on Saturday for a 10 a.m. PT tipoff in a game that will be televised by CBS.
