Gordon Named Mountain West Player of the Week
Feb. 20, 2012
Albuquerque, N.M. --- Drew Gordon was named the Mountain West Player of the Week, as the Lobos continue to reap the benefits of a big week of wins over nationally-ranked opponents. Ironically, the Lobos have no time to enjoy any of the laurels as they face a difficult road swing at Colorado State Tuesday night and TCU on Saturday night, teams that are a combined 10-0 at home in conference play.
Gordon earned his third MW Player of the Week award for the season, and for the fifth time in his 1 ½ year UNM career.
Gordon averaged 22.0 points and 18.5 rebounds while helping New Mexico take sole possession of first place in the Mountain West standings with back-to-back wins over top-15 opponents last week. In Wednesday's 77-67 victory at No. 13 San Diego State, the San Jose, Calif., native notched his 25th career double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds while also tallying two assists and one blocked shot in 35 minutes of action. Gordon then registered his 26th career double-double with a personal-best 27 points and 20 rebounds in a 65-45 win over No. 11 UNLV. He is just the eighth player in the last decade to record a 20-point, 20-rebound performance against a top-25 opponent.
The senior forward also had three steals and two assists while shooting 65 percent (13-of-20) from the field in 36 minutes of play against the Runnin' Rebels. For the week, Gordon was 20-of-35 (.571) from the field and 4-of-5 (.800) from the free throw line.
Gordon was honored by ESPN on Sunday night as the network's National Player of the Week by its college basketball staff, and the Lobos were named ESPN's Team of the Week.
The week culminated in New Mexico earning its first national ranking of the season, coming in No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, ahead of No. 25 San Diego State, but still behind No. 20 UNLV.
The Lobos also rank No. 21 in CBS Sports' College Basketball Poll, and Gordon is up for USBWA National Player of the Week honors as well. That award is announced on Tuesday. New Mexico plays at Colorado State Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on the Mountain.
