Falcons Play at Fresno State on Saturday
The Air Force men’s basketball team looks to sweep its second Mountain West opponent this season on Saturday, March 2 when it battles the Fresno State Bulldogs in Fresno, Calif. Tip-off at the Save Mart Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PT). Air Force improved to 16-10 and 7-6 in the Mountain West after a 72-66 victory over Wyoming at home on Tuesday. Fresno State dropped to 9-18 overall and 3-11 in the league following a 74-67 loss at Colorado State on Wednesday. Air Force, which defeated Fresno State 62-50 on Jan. 30 at home, is tied for fifth in the Mountain West standings with Boise State, while the Bulldogs are in ninth place.
Win over Wyoming Secures Winning Season
The 72-66 victory over Wyoming on Tuesday secured the 16th winning season in the 57-year history of Air Force basketball. The victory also marked the 10th season in program history with at least 16 wins.
7-6 is Fifth-Best Start Ever in League Play
Air Force’s 7-6 record in the Mountain West is the fifth-best mark in program history after 13 league games. The Falcons have been 11-2 once in the past (2003-04), 10-3 once (2006-07), 9-4 once (2005-06), 8-5 once (2004-05) and this is the only season at 7-6.
Seven League Wins a Rarity
With its 72-66 victory over Wyoming on Tuesday, this is just the sixth season since Air Force joined a conference in 1980-81 that it has won at least seven conference games.
Kamryn Williams Has Career Game Against Cowboys
Sophomore Kamryn Williams had the best game of his career on Tuesday in Air Force’s victory over Wyoming at Clune Arena. Williams scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and tied his career best with 10 rebounds. It was the second double-double of his career and the first by an Air Force player this season.
Williams, who played a season-high 27 minutes against the Cowboys, was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and tied his season-high with three assists on Tuesday.
The Falcons continute on the road and will play the San Diego State Aztecs on Wednesday, March 6 beginning at 8:30 p.m. (PT). The game will be telecast by Time Warner Cable Sports Net.
Michael Lyons Has Historic Game vs. Colorado State
Senior Michael Lyons nearly single-handedly defeated 24th-ranked Colorado State at Clune Arena on Jan. 16. Despite a career-high 45 points by Lyons, Air Force lost to the Rams, 89-86. His 45 points were:
• The fifth-most ever by an Air Force player in one game and the most since Bob Beckel scored a school-record 50 against Arizona on Feb. 28, 1959.
• The most ever by an Air Force player not named Bob Beckel (Beckel owns the top four point totals)
• The most ever by an Air Force player in a conference game and by any player in a game at Clune Arena
• The fourth-highest point total in a Division I game this season
• Lyons’ 17 made field goals were one shy of the school record (18 by Bob Beckel vs. Colorado School of Mines on Dec. 15, 1956)
• Lyons’ 17 made field goals were the second-most ever by a Mountain West player (Jimmer Fredette - 22) and the most in a Mountain West regular-season game
Lyons Named Mountain West Player of the Week
For his efforts, Michael Lyons was named the Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 18. This was the second time in his career Lyons has won the award. In addition to his career-high 45 points against CSU, he scored a game-high 27 points and tied his season-high with four assists in a 71-56 victory over UNLV on Jan. 13.
All But One Loss to Winning Teams
The nine teams that have defeated Air Force this season have a combined 180-70 record (.720 winning percentage). New Mexico is 24-4, Wichita State is 24-6, Florida is 22-5, Colorado State is 22-6, UNLV is
21-7, Colorado is 19-8, Boise State is 19-8, Richmond is 17-11 and Nevada is 12-15. New Mexico, Colorado, Florida, UNLV, Wichita State and Colorado State have all been in the Top 25 this season.
Lyons Leads the Mountain West in Scoring
Michael Lyons continues to lead the Mountain West in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game. Lyons, who has scored in double figures in 11 straight games, is ranked 34th in the nation in scoring according to the latest NCAA Division I rankins released on Friday, March 1.
70 Points Seems to be the Key
Air Force is 12-3 this season when it scores 70 points or more and 4-7 when scoring less than 70. Defensively speaking, the Falcons are a perfect 14-0 when allowing 70 points or less and 2-10 when allowing more than 70. The two victories were an 86-72 triumph over Montana State and the 91-80 win over Boise State on Jan. 19.
Todd Fletcher Third in Nation in Assist-Turnover Ratio
Senior point guard Todd Fletcher leads the Mountain West and is ranked No. 3 in the nation in assist-turnover ratio at 3.43. Fletcher has 103 assists and 30 turnovers in 26 games this season.
Outstanding Free-Throw Shooting in League Play
Air Force is by far the best free-throw shooting team in the Mountain West in conference games only. After shooting just 65.8 percent from the line in the 12 games prior to starting conference play, the Falcons are shooting 79.6 percent (160-201) from the stripe in its 13 league games. Boise State is No. 2 in the MW for conference games only at 75.2 percent.
