SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's basketball head coach Steve Fisher and sophomore guard Jamaal Franklin were honored by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Tuesday morning. Fisher was named District IX Coach of the Year for the second straight season, while Franklin landed on the all-District IX squad.
After earning the district's highest coaching honor for the first time in 2011, Fisher was voted by USBWA voters in the California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Arizona and Alaska as the top coach in the district in 2012. The 13th-year head coach has guided the Aztecs to a 24-6 record and a share of the Mountain West regular-season title. This season, SDSU rose to as high as 13th in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll and 12th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Top 25. Yesterday, Fisher was named MW Coach of the Year for the second season in a row as well.
Franklin, the 2012 Mountain West Player of the Year and first-team all-MW selection, was named to the 10-person all-district team for the first time of his career. The Hawthorne, Calif., product averaged 17.1 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals for the nationally ranked Aztecs. Franklin also shot 80.3 percent from the free-throw line. In 28 games this season, the sophomore scored in double figures 25 times and produced a double-double on 11 different occasions.
