#AztecMBB, FGCU To Face With Sweet 16 Berth On The Line
March 23, 2013
Following just the third NCAA tournament victory in the last three seasons, seventh-seeded San Diego State (23-10) looks to advance to its second Sweet 16 in three years when the Aztecs face Atlantic Sun Conference champion and 15th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast (25-10) on Sunday evening in Philadelphia in the third round of the tournament.
The first semifinal game from the Philadelphia site will air live on TBS at 7:10 p.m. ET (4:10 p.m. PT). As always, the game can be heard on radio on KOGO AM 600 and 101 KGB and there is national radio coverage through Dial Global network affiliates.
One of just 17 schools nationally to currently play in four consecutive NCAA tournaments, the Aztecs are in postseason play for the eighth consecutive season and have already clinched an eighth straight 20-win campaign.
On Friday night, San Diego State won its third NCAA tournament game in its last five tries with a 70-55 victory over 10th-seeded Oklahoma. The Aztecs trailed by nine points midway through the first half (23-14 with 9:40 left), but outscored the Sooners 56-32 over the final 29:19 to secure the victory.
Once again the Aztecs produced a suffocating defensive effort. San Diego State limited Oklahoma to 39.7-percent field-goal shooting. It marked the 22nd time this season that SDSU has held an opponent to 40 percent or less from the floor (19-3 in those contests) and held Oklahoma to 16 points less than its season average.
Junior guard Jamaal Franklin had 21 points (19th career 20-point game), and added eight rebounds and a game-high five assists. Senior guard James Rahon added 17 points and made two three-point field goals (SDSU is 17-1 since the beginning of last season when that occurs) and senior guard Chase Tapley tallied 10 points.
San Diego State is facing an Eagles side that advanced to the third round following a 78-68 victory over Georgetown on Friday evening. Sherwood Brown scored 24 points and Bernard Thompson added 23 points for FGCU.
