Battle On The Midway Media Day Quotes
May 2, 2012
SAN DIEGO -
SDSU head coach Steve Fisher
On the time he played a game of basketball in an outdoor environment:
"I probably was a high school coach and we organized a pick-up game. I've never played in one that mattered on any significant level, but this will be one that I will very much look forward to."
On whether there is a way to prepare the team to play outdoors:
"I can tell you we're going to practice outdoors, but we're not. This will be a challenge. Jim Boeheim had the number one team in America almost all season long last year. He has historically played the best zone in the country. That's all they play and they're good. They're long and they make you shoot an inordinate number of three;s and we have to someway, somehow not shoot quite so many. We have not been a great three-point shooting team, but maybe the wind will help us. We'll put it up and maybe some of those that wouldn't go in will be blown in. I'm not worried about that to be honest with you. The excitement of being involved and being a participant in this event, given the history of our military, playing on the USS Midway, is really exciting for everyone associated with San Diego State.
On his initial reaction once he was told SDSU was to play in the game:
"How quickly can we sign on the dotted line and let us know who we can find as an opponent. We want to get the biggest name in the room to help also make it a draw. We've done that also with Jim Boeheim, a hall-of-fame coach in the Syracuse program. It speaks for itself."
On being the game to watch on November 9:
"That will be the first day you get to play college basketball. I'm sure we're going to be `the game' in the country on November the ninth. That will be fun. All eyes from coast to coast and outside the continental United States will have the opportunity to watch and that's exciting also."
Junior guard Chase Tapley
On how much he is looking forward to playing on the Midway:
"I'm really forward to it (after) watching it last year with North Carolina and Michigan State, the President was here and all that that comes with the USS Midway. (With San Diego) being a military city, representing San Diego is a great honor. I'm so excited. I can't wait."
On the matchup between SDSU and Syracuse:
"I'd say it's going to be two great teams going at it. In the past few years, Syracuse and San Diego State have been good and had (some of the best) teams in the country. It will be just two teams going at it with two great coaches in Jim Boeheim and Steve Fisher. I just can't wait to be a part of it."
On the possible elements:
"Looking at the game last year, there were a lot of kids slipping on the floor. You are playing outside in San Diego. It's a beautiful city and with the wind, you can get a little breeze. We just have to come here pregame and shoot around a lot to get used to the wind and the conditions."
Sophomore guard Xavier Thames
On how excited the team is on having the Battle on the Midway in San Diego:
"We're really excited, as coach (Fisher) was saying it's more than a game. We're playing on the USS Midway for all of the military. It's just exciting and I'm blessed to be part of this."
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim
On playing in the Battle on the Midway:
"I saw the game last year, we wanted to be part of this. It's a great event. Anything you can do to help out our veterans. San Diego State has a great team. We have a really good team. It should be a great game."
"Steve Fisher is a very good friend of mine. He's done an unbelievable building job here with this program. They are as good as anybody, they're a top-10, top-15 team and they should be again next year."
