Lobos Join Cancer Fight With Coaches vs. Cancer Gala

May 8, 2012

Where: Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa
When: Saturday, May 12 - 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

To say Lobo Coach Yvonne Sanchez is New Mexico's latest addition to the Coaches vs. Cancer BasketBall Gala is only taking in her title as a Lobo coach. This battle recruits on a daily basis - minute by minute.

As Sanchez puts it, "This is a fight for everyone."

The fight is against a demon of a disease, which strikes at thousands of families daily adding to the army of people impacted by cancer. Worse - there also are people leaving the fight daily as approximately 1,500 people die every day from the disease. In the U.S., about one of every four deaths is from cancer.

The Lobos are once again sponsoring a fund-raising event at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa to do their part in the battle. Sanchez, the University of New Mexico's first-year head basketball coach, is joining men's Coach Steve Alford and Paul Krebs, Vice President of Athletics, as the UNM athletic department hosts for this event.

"This is a great cause and since the Lobos are such a big deal to this community, it's important that we lend our name to an event like this," said Sanchez. "This is a great event, a fun event to attend and it gives the entire community an opportunity to support a great cause. This isn't just a Lobo thing."

No, the battle against cancer has nothing to do with championship trophies, Xs and Os or your love of Lobos or Lobo basketball. Sadly, there is a scoreboard, of sorts, kept by the numbers of people afflicted by the disease.

It's also a battle in which the percentage rates are increasing in favor of the victims. There are more survivors. That rate needs to continue to go up. Yes, it's a matter of life and death and a few Lobos and the American Cancer are asking Lobo fans - everyone - to step up and join the fight.

"I don't know of anyone who hasn't been affected by cancer in some way," said Marjori Krebs, a co-chair for the event, and wife of Paul Krebs. "We are hoping the connection with Lobo athletics and basketball will bring more visibility to the event and the cause.

"This is a great opportunity for people who are basketball fans and Lobo fans to come together for a great cause. But we welcome anyone who appreciates this cause and wants to join us in the fight."

The Coaches vs. Cancer Gala includes a reception, an auction, dinner, dancing, and a performance by the popular "Pink Flamingos."

The funds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Since 1993, the Coaches vs. Cancer program has helped raise around $50 million through community galas, golf tournaments, other local events, and national annual events

"The Gala is a tremendous event, a lot of fun, and it's an important community project for our athletic department," said Lobo Coach Steve Alford.

"This is a neat way to reach our community, improve awareness for this cause, and raise money for research, care, and summer camps for kids. This event is extremely important to us and we hope our community, our state, embrace this effort and join us."

Of course, a huge the key to this success is getting people to dig into their pockets and donate. The Gala offers a fun and special way to contribute. It's a party with Lobos, Lobo fans and community leaders. It's also a step forward in knocking cancer out of the ring.
