May 21, 2012

LAS VEGAS ( - UNLV head men's basketball coach Dave Rice announced Monday that sophomore guard Reggie Smith has been granted his release from the Runnin' Rebel program.

"I enjoyed my time at UNLV," Smith said. "However, my grandmother is really sick and I have decided to find a school closer to home so I can be near her and my family."

Smith transferred to UNLV from Marquette after the Fall 2010 semester. He sat out the Spring 2011 and Fall 2011 semesters in Las Vegas before becoming eligible to play for the Runnin' Rebels this past December. He appeared in 20 games for UNLV during the 2011-12 season, averaging 2.5 points per game.

"I appreciate the time Reggie spent in our program," Rice said. "I understand him wanting to be closer to home and wish him and his family the best."

Smith is from Chicago, where he attended Thornton Township High School.
