Runnin' Rebel Radio Voice Receives Extension

June 11, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball radio play-by-play broadcaster Jon Sandler has been given a five-year contract extension, IMG College, the exclusive multimedia rights holder for UNLV Athletics, announced Monday.

"It is an honor to be the radio voice of Runnin' Rebel basketball," Sandler said. "The level of interest and excitement in the program is as high as it has been since I have been associated with the program. Under Coach (Dave) Rice and his staff, it will only increase.

"I take my role as the main point of contact between the team and the community very seriously. This extension will allow me to continue to be a part of what already is the most exciting time in the program's history in decades."

Sandler will be entering his ninth season calling UNLV men's basketball games when the 2012-13 season begins this November. Runnin' Rebel legend Robert Smith will enter his fourth season as the analyst alongside Sandler.

"Jon does a terrific job as our play-by-play announcer," Rice said. "He is a fantastic representative of our program and we are extremely pleased he will be on our team for many seasons to come."

Sandler, who has also served as the radio voice for UNLV football for the past two seasons as a temporary replacement, will now concentrate his efforts solely with the men's basketball program as a permanent football broadcaster is in the process of being hired.

"Jon is very talented and does an outstanding job," said Jim Livengood, UNLV Athletics Director. "We receive such positive feedback from our fans about Jon's broadcasting work and we are thrilled that he will continue to be the radio voice of the Runnin' Rebels.

"We are very appreciative of his work with our football program over the past two years as well. He has also done an outstanding job there, but UNLV has traditionally had a separate radio crew for football and will get back to that this year."

"I will certainly miss doing UNLV football games," Sandler said. "I enjoyed my time filling in. I know Coach (Bobby) Hauck and his staff have things headed in the right direction.
