New Mexico Hoops to Host Davidson on ESPN as Part of College Hoops Tip-off Marathon
July 11, 2012
Bristol, Conn. --- The University of New Mexico has been selected to appear in the fifth annual ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, and the Lobos will host Davidson University at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, November 12. The game is one of 11 that will be broadcast on ESPN.
The Lobos and Davidson will be the second game to tip-off, and it is one of four in the Marathon to feature two squads that made it to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Lobos and the Wildcats will tip-off after West Virginia and Gonzaga, which starts the Marathon. The Marathon ends on Tuesday, Nov. 13 with two games from Atlanta: Michigan State vs. Kansas and Duke vs. Kentucky.
"We are obviously very excited to be a part of the ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon," said head coach Steve Alford, who has led the Lobos to a 126-46 record over the past five years, the winningest five-year period in school history. "We have not had the opportunity to have ESPN in The Pit for a regular season game since I've been here, so to tip-off our season with a national audience is extremely exciting for our program."
While the late tip-off time isn't ideal, the amount of national exposure for the Lobo program is immeasurable. The Lobos will be highlighted throughout the build-up to the college basketball season in commercials on all of the ESPN family of networks, and the game-highlights will be featured prominently on ESPN's SportsCenter, at halftime of the other Marathon games, as well as during ESPN's College GameDay Driven by State Farm, which will take place in Atlanta.
The Lobos are the only Mountain West team taking part in the Marathon, and they are one of 12 schools that were in the 2011 NCAA Tournament that are in this year's Marathon.
"While we understand that a midnight tip-off will be a challenge for some, I believe that it is worth the tremendous exposure that our program will receive," said Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs. "This is a chance to showcase not just The Pit, but the best fans in America, and to get ESPN here for a regular season game to feature that was too good an opportunity to let pass."
The Lobos are working on making this a fun event and details will be released once they are finalized. Also, parking lots will be monitored for the game, but parking for the Davidson game will be free.
The game is a feature matchup between a two teams that excelled in 2011-12. New Mexico went 28-7 last year, winning the Mountain West regular season and tournament titles before advancing to the NCAA's third round of the Tournament, losing to eventual Final Four participant Louisville 59-56. Davidson, which returns its top eight scorers, went 25-8 last year, winning the Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Wildcats saw their season also ended by Louisville, losing 69-62.
The last regular season game in The Pit on the ESPN family of networks was on February 4, 2006 when the Lobos defeated Utah 64-53 on ESPN2. The last time a game from The Pit was on ESPN was February 14, 2005, when the Lobos defeated Air Force 63-52. ESPN is available in 98 million homes in the United States.
