Oh, Canada! ... Runnin' Rebels Arrive In Ottawa

Aug. 16, 2012

OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada (UNLVRebels.com) -

On Thursday, Aug. 16, the Runnin’ Rebels left Las Vegas for their summer foreign exhibition tour of Canada. The NCAA permits this type of trip once every four years and the team was able to get a head start on the 2012-13 season by having 10 days of practice in Las Vegas prior to departing. UNLV will play four exhibition games while north of the border - two of the games will be played here in Ottawa, while the other two will be in Montreal.

Some other news and notes:

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
The Runnin’ Rebels left campus at 9 a.m. PT for McCarran Airport and were scheduled to leave on a non-stop Air Canada flight to Montreal at 11:15 a.m. PT. The flight was delayed and left almost exactly two hours later. After landing in Montreal, the team then bused 124 miles to Ottawa, stopping for food along the way. Finally, just after 12:30 a.m. ET on Friday, UNLV checked in to its hotel and retired for the night.

AND NOW, YOUR RUNNIN’ REBELS…
The following 10 scholarship players made the trip and are all expected to play once the exhibition games get underway:

Daquan Cook (Fr., G), Bryce Dejean-Jones (So., G), Savon Goodman (Fr., F), Justin Hawkins (Sr. G), Carlos Lopez (Jr., F), Anthony Marshall (Sr., G), Demetris Morant (Fr., F), Mike Moser (Jr., F), Katin Reinhardt (Fr., G) and Quintrell Thomas (Sr., F)

The other three scholarship players were unable to participate in these summer practices or travel with the team to Canada: Anthony Bennett (Fr., F), Khem Birch (So., F) and Roscoe Smith (Jr., F).

Bennett, who is from Brampton, Ontario, is cleared for the fall semester, but wasn’t certified in time for summer school. (Being in classes during the summer is a requirement for incoming students to be able to participate in a summer foreign exhibition tour.). Birch, also from Canada (Montreal, Quebec), is not eligible until after the fall semester because of his mid-year transfer to UNLV from Pitt in January. Smith, a transfer from Connecticut, is still awaiting word from the NCAA on his waiver application.

RUNNIN’ REBEL FEVER
When the Runnin’ Rebels began practicing for their Canadian tour on Aug. 4, over 400 fans packed the Mendenhall Center to get their first glimpse of the 2012-13 squad. There aren’t too many programs across the country enjoying that kind of incredible support from their community as UNLV does. All Canada trip practices were open to the public and each and every session had a large number of onlookers.
