FRESNO, Calif. --- In its Mountain West debut, the Fresno State men's basketball team will play 12 of its 29 regular season games against teams that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Tournament, including six of those games at home inside the Save Mart Center.
"Our University and program are looking forward to our first season as members of the Mountain West Conference, and the challenging schedule it will bring," head coach Rodney Terry said. "There will be high level basketball environments night in and night out, competing against some of the best teams in the country."
Fresno State opens the 2012-13 season on Nov. 9 at Texas as the Bulldogs' second-year head coach Rodney Terry returns to Austin for the first time since leaving in 2011 to lead the 'Dogs.
'Dogs Entering Tenth Season at Save Mart Center
This season marks the tenth for Fresno State at the Save Mart Center, where the Bulldogs own a 97-50 record in their first nine seasons at the arena.
The home opener will be Friday, Nov. 16 when Fresno State hosts Pacific for the first of 14 regular season home games. Season ticket packages are available starting at $99 (plus a minimum donation of $50) through The Bulldog Foundation by calling 559-278-7160. In addition to the Bulldogs' four conference home games against NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, Fresno State will also welcome two non-conference opponents that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Long Beach State visits on Sunday, Nov. 25 and defending Pacific-12 Tournament champion Colorado returns to Fresno for the first time since 1974 when the Bulldogs play the Buffaloes in a midweek Wednesday contest on Dec. 12.
The other three nonconference regular season home games have the Bulldogs facing UC Irvine (Dec. 15) and two Division II schools - San Diego Christian (Dec. 6) and Sonoma State (Dec. 30), in addition to an exhibition match-up against Fresno Pacific (Nov. 2).
Along with the season opener at Texas, Fresno State will also play road non-conference games at UC Riverside (Nov. 14), Cal Poly (Nov. 19), Southern Illinois (Nov. 28), Long Beach State (Dec. 3), Washington State (Dec. 9) and UCLA (Dec. 22).
Mountain West Slate Features Tough Competition
The Bulldogs' first Mountain West schedule will start on Wednesday, Jan. 9 with a home game against San Diego State. The other home MW games will be versus: Wyoming (Jan. 16), Nevada (Jan. 19), Colorado State (Jan. 26), UNLV (Feb. 6), New Mexico (Feb. 13), Boise State (Feb. 23) and Air Force (March 2).
"We're excited about the great home court atmosphere that our community and fans will create during conference games at the Save Mart Center, and are definitely aware of the tradition packed venues that we will be playing in on the road," Terry said. "It's a great time to be a part of the Mountain West Conference, and we are well aware of the tradition and success that we are now a part of."
The season will culminate with all nine MW schools playing in the 2013 Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center from March 12-16.
Over the past 34 years, Fresno State ranks fourth in wins (600) among all Division I institutions on the West Coast, which includes the states of California, Oregon and Washington.
Terry Excited About First Full Recruiting Class
With three returning starters, including rising junior guards Kevin Olekaibe (17.8 ppg) and Tyler Johnson (9.3 ppg/4.6 rpg), and junior forward Jerry Brown (8.8 ppg/5.5 rpg), Fresno State returns five letterwinners and features the addition of at least seven newcomers. Senior veterans Kevin Foster, Brad Ely and Garrett Johnson will be back for their final seasons at Fresno State.
The Bulldogs' incoming class is one of the program's top collections of talent in a single class that adds immediate depth to Terry's roster. All of the newcomers have a chance to compete for immediate playing time.
The class is comprised of junior guard Allen Huddleston (who sat out last season as a Division I transfer), sophomore forward Braeden Anderson and currently five freshmen - Aaron Anderson, Tanner Giddings, Marvelle Harris, Broderick Newbill and Robert Upshaw. All of the incoming players enrolled at Fresno State for the 2012 summer session and began working out as much as allowed by the recently updated NCAA guidelines.
For fans looking to secure 2012-13 men's basketball season tickets and support Fresno State student-athlete scholarships, packages are available starting at $99 for Level 7 season tickets (plus a minimum donation of $50) through The Bulldog Foundation by calling 559-278-7160.
