Sept. 20, 2012
Phoenix, Ariz. --- University of New Mexico head men's basketball coach Steve Alford was one of 60 Hall of Famers and celebrities that took part in the inaugural Jerry Colangelo Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic at the Wigwam Resort.
The Jerry Colangelo Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic Presented by NIKE & IOA at the Wigwam Resort was a two-day event that featured a 2012 Olympic Team/USA Basketball Dedication, a golf tournament played over three championship courses, and the entire event benefitted the U.S. Basketball Hall of Fame, which recently inducted former Lobo Mel Daniels into its doors.
Alford was one of over 60 Hall of Famers, celebrities, and basketball personalities to take part in the inaugural event. Other prominent names with Alford include Dr. J Julius Erving, Dave Bing, Calvin Murphy, Grant Hill, Meadowlark Lemon, Elgin Baylor, Clyde Drexler, Ralph Sampson, and Michael Wilbon. The celebrities teamed up with foursomes on the course, all to raise money for Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
"This was a very humbling experience for me to be around so many basketball greats," said Alford. "To be involved with an event that raises money for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame was a great honor."
Alford, who is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, has a 434-229 career coaching record in 21 years, including 126-46 record at New Mexico. Alford won a national championship at Indiana in 1987, hitting an NCAA record seven threes in the championship game. He also won an Olympic Gold Medal, helping Team USA to the 1984 Olympic title. He has led his teams to the postseason in 16 of his 20 full seasons, including nine NCAA Tournaments. He has led UNM to 30 wins in 2009-10 and 28 wins last year, the top two marks in UNM's rich and long basketball history.
