The San Diego State men's basketball team is projected to be a high seed and advance deep in the NCAA Tournament, according to USA Today's College Basketball Special Edition.

The national publication has the Aztecs earning the Mountain West's automatic bid and a No. 4 seed in the West Region. USA Today also has SDSU advancing to the Elite 8.

In its conference preview, USA Today has San Diego State finishing in second place and recognizes the Aztecs' recruiting class as one of the best in the MW. Reigning league player of the year Jamaal Franklin, meanwhile, has been tabbed a first-team all-MW performer.

USA Today also highlighted three SDSU games as "don't-miss games" in the Mountain West starting with its season-opener vs. Syracuse on Nov. 9. The other two include the Aztecs' get-together with UCLA on Dec. 1, and their road game at UNLV on Feb. 16.

The Aztecs will start their preparation for the 2012-13 season on Friday, Oct. 12, when they participate in Madness on the Mesa, which is set to take place inside Viejas Arena. The free event starts at 9 p.m. PT.

San Diego State, which finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 26-8 record, is coming off its fourth straight season with at least 25 victories and its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In each of the last seven years, SDSU has won 20 or more games and advanced to the postseason.

In 2012-13, San Diego State is slated to return four of its five starters and its top four scorers from last season. The Aztecs are also slated to welcome three Division I transfers and a heralded recruiting class.
