Men's Basketball Capturing National Headlines
Oct. 25, 2012
SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State men's basketball team continues to receive national attention with the 2012-13 season rapidly approaching.
The Aztecs have been tabbed 11th nationally by NBCSports.com and the website also named the SDSU backcourt of Jamaal Franklin, James Rahon Chase Tapley and Xavier Thames as the third best in the country. Grantland, meanwhile, listed San Diego State as one of four Dangerous Outsiders.
Individually, Franklin was selected to Dick Vitale of ESPN's All-Solid Gold Second Team and named the third-best wing on CBSSports.com's Top 50 Wings list.
Earlier this week, SDSU was voted as the preseason Mountain West favorite in the league's annual media poll. Franklin was named the preseason player of the year and was joined on the first team by Chase Tapley. Dwayne Polee II, meanwhile, was tabbed the co-newcomer of the year.
The Aztecs, who finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 26-8 record, are coming off their fourth straight season with at least 25 victories and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In each of the last seven years, the back-to-back Mountain West regular-season champions have won 20 or more games and have advanced to the postseason.
In 2012-13, San Diego State returns four of its five starters and its top four scorers from last season. The Aztecs also welcome three Division I transfers and a heralded recruiting class.
