Men's Basketball Ranked 16th in SI's Preseason Poll
Nov. 6, 2012
SAN DIEGO -
SDSU is coming off a pair of double-digit exhibition victories, including last night's 80-56 win over UC San Diego. The Aztecs had three players score in double figures and were led by Chase Tapley's 15 points.
San Diego State enters the 2012-13 campaign as the preseason MW favorite and returns the conference player of the year and All-American in junior guard Jamaal Franklin. Tapley, meanwhile, is a preseason all-conference selection and the duo is a part of a quartet of returning starters (Xavier Thames, James Rahon).
Joining the Aztecs' four starters are three Division I transfers in Dwayne Polee II, JJ O'Brien and James Johnson. Polee, a transfer from St. John's, was named the league's co-newcomer of the year, while O'Brien earned the start in both exhibition games after sitting out last season following his transfer from Utah. Johnson, a 6-9, 235-pound forward who transferred from Virginia, will be eligible at mid-year when semester grades are posted.
SDSU gets its season underway on Friday when it faces SI's 11th-ranked squad, Syracuse. The Aztecs and Orange will participate in Northrop Grumman Presents Battle on the Midway, which will take place on the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum at 5 p.m. PT.
