Winston Shepard to Serve Three-Game Penalty
Nov. 13, 2012
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's basketball coach Steve Fisher announced today that Winston Shepard will serve a three-game NCAA penalty for a violation of NCAA preferential treatment legislation. The penalty will begin immediately.
The penalty is a result of Shepard inadvertently violating an NCAA rule. Upon becoming aware of the situation, the San Diego State coaching staff immediately reported the situation to the compliance staff, which self-reported the issue to the NCAA.
Shepard will continue to practice with the team and is allowed to take part in all team activities, with the exception of playing or traveling to games, during the penalty.
The University has appealed the penalty to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement and hopes that a final decision will be reached shortly. The penalty, however, will be enforced during the NCAA appeal process.
