CSU's Hornung named MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State senior forward Pierce Hornung has been named the Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games through December 23. This is Hornung’s first career MW weekly accolade.
Hornung was named Most Valuable Player of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic after leading Colorado State to a 4-0 record and the tournament title last week. The Rams posted preliminary-round wins against North Florida and CSU Bakersfield at Moby Arena before ending the week with victories over Portland and Virginia Tech in Las Vegas.
The Arvada, Colo., native opened the week with 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal in 26 minutes of action in the Rams' 83-55 win over UNF on Monday. He followed that performance with 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists in a 78-58 triumph against CSU Bakersfield in the second round.
After tournament action moved to Las Vegas, the junior forward posted a career-high 24 points and game-high 11 rebounds as the Rams tallied a 70-53 semifinal win over Portland. In Sunday’s 88-52 championship victory against Virginia Tech, Hornung tallied his second-straight double-double, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He also had four assists and one blocked shot in 27 minutes on the floor.
For the week, Hornung averaged 16.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while shooting 71.4 percent (25-of-35) from the field, including 50 percent (2-of-4) from 3-point range, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free throw line. Twenty of his 36 rebounds were on the offensive glass. Hornung also recorded three blocks and one steal, and dished out 11 assists while committing just five turnovers over the four-game span.
