Lobos Named ESPN's Team of the Week
Dec. 30, 2012
The University of New Mexico knew it had itself a big win when defeating No. 8 Cincinnati on the road on Thursday night in a nationally televised 55-54 victory on ESPN2 when pretty much the entire college basketball world was watching. Now, the squad has been named ESPN's "Team of the Week" for that win.
UNM earned the distinction on ESPN's Sunday "Pick'N'Roll Page", which doles out weekly awards from Team of the Week to various weekly superlatives. The Lobos, the only team in the nation with 13 wins, handed Cincinnati its first loss of the season. UNM is now 3-0 in road games, and 6-0 away from The Pit this season.
In earning "Team of the Week", head college basketball writer Andy Katz noted UNM's tough travel day, which included flights to Denver, Chicago, and Louisville and then an eventual bus ride, all of which added up to UNM not being able to practice the night before the game. Katz also credited UNM head coach Steve Alford for managing the final possession of Cincinnati. The Bearcats had 14.1 seconds to score the winning basket, but Alford had UNM foul twice (the Lobos had two fouls to give), forcing Cincy to inbounds the ball for the final play with just 4.5 seconds left.
Alex Kirk would eventually block Sean Kilpatrick's go-ahead attempt, and UNM had the win.
