Mountain West Names Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Dec. 31, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico sophomore center Alex Kirk has been named the Mountain West Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games through December 30. This is Kirk's first career MW weekly accolade.
Kirk scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as New Mexico handed then-No. 8/8 Cincinnati its first loss of the season last Thursday. The 55-54 decision marked the Lobos' first non-conference road win over a top 10 team since a 70-68 victory at No. 2 Arizona on Dec. 21, 1999.
Hailing from Los Alamos, N.M., Kirk went 6-of-8 from the field (.750) against the Bearcats, including hitting his lone three-point attempt. He scored nine of his 15 points in the second half, including six during a 2:30 stretch that gave the Lobos their first lead of the game. Kirk also had one steal and three blocked shots in the contest, including a rejection of Sean Kilpatrick's three-point attempt with 1.5 seconds remaining that sealed the Lobos' victory.
