FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State football team wrapped up its first week of spring practice on Saturday with flashes of greatness but room for improvement as it prepares to enter another week of spring ball.

“We got better [today],” said head coach Tim DeRuyter. “We still got a long, long way to go, but it’s good to see guys who consistently compete.”

Some old faces continue to turn heads in drills with the likes of senior wide receiver Isaiah Burse and junior defensive back Sean Alston, who each played in all 13 games last season.

“I think Isaiah Burse is doing a really good job; I like what he’s getting done,” DeRuyter said. “I think Sean Alston is getting some things done too, it’s fun to watch him.”

While other squad members, new and returning, are getting their chance to put a stamp on this new Bulldog team.

”We got some guys that are emerging that haven’t before,” said DeRuyter. “I think Maurice Poyadue and Daryl Cash are doing some things in flashes.”

“It’s a time for guys to earn their position, so were going to put guys in there that haven’t had a shot. Guys are going to get their opportunity because that’s what spring is all about. “

“Overall it’s a typical spring were there’s going to be some high and lows, but it’s fun to see guys compete,” DeRuyter added.

The intensity and physicality will start to pick up as spring football moves along. The 'Dogs are back on the field Monday morning and after that still have nine practices before The Real California Milk Spring Game on March 23 at noon in Bulldog Stadium.
