Aztec Football Announces 2013 Schedule
April 11, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Coming off a share of the Mountain West title and its school-record third consecutive bowl appearance, San Diego State revealed its 2013 football schedule on Thursday. The Aztecs will play six home games at Qualcomm Stadium and six road contests.
Game times and television arrangements will be announced at a later date.
SDSU opens the 2013 slate at home against Eastern Illinois on Aug. 31. San Diego State and the Panthers, who won the Ohio Valley Conference last year, will be meeting for the second time and first since Oct. 6, 2001, when the Aztecs won, 40-7, at home.
Following the season opener, SDSU will travel to Ohio State on Sept. 7 for the fourth-ever encounter between the two schools. The Buckeyes are coming off a 12-0 record, including an 8-0 mark in the Big Ten. The teams previously met in 2001 (Ohio State, 27-12), 2003 (No. 2 Ohio State, 16-13) and 2005 (No. 9 Ohio State 27-6) with all three games taking place in Columbus.
After a bye week, San Diego State will return to America's Finest City to play host to Oregon State on Sept. 21. The Aztecs are 2-1 all-time vs. the Beavers, but lost the last meeting, 35-3, in Corvallis. OSU was 9-4 last year with a 6-3 mark in the Pac-12.
SDSU wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Sept. 28 when it travels to Las Cruces, N.M., to play at New Mexico State. San Diego State is 8-1-1 all-time against the Aggies and has won each of the past six encounters. The two teams recently met in 2009 (Aztecs, 34-17, at home) and 2010 (Aztecs, 41-21, in Las Cruces).
SDSU kicks off its defense of the Mountain West title on Oct. 4 (Friday) when it welcomes Nevada. Last year, San Diego State beat the Wolf Pack, 39-38, in a thrilling overtime victory on a game-winning 2-point conversion pass from Adam Dingwell to Adam Roberts.
The Aztecs then travel to play Air Force on Oct. 10 (Thursday), marking a stretch where they will play three games in 12 days. SDSU has won three straight against the Falcons, including a 28-9 win last year at Qualcomm Stadium.
After a much-needed bye week, San Diego State will play host to Fresno State (Oct. 26) and New Mexico (Nov. 2) in consecutive weeks. The Bulldogs, who went 9-4 last year and shared the MW title with the Aztecs and Boise State, beat SDSU, 52-40, last season in Fresno to win back the Oil Can. San Diego State and the Lobos, meanwhile, are meeting for the first time since 2011 when the Aztecs won, 37-7, in San Diego. SDSU has won three straight in the series.
San Diego State follows its two-game homestand with a two-game road trip, beginning Nov. 9 at San Jose State. The Spartans escaped with a 38-34 win vs. the Aztecs last year at Qualcomm Stadium in a game that featured one tie and four lead changes in the fourth quarter alone.
SDSU then makes its first trip to Hawai'i since 2005 when it meets the Warriors on Nov. 16. San Diego State, which leads the all-time series, 16-9-2, beat Hawai'i, last year, 52-14, in San Diego.
The Aztecs play their final regular season home game the following week (Nov. 23) against Boise State. SDSU downed the Broncos, 21-19, last year in Boise for its first-ever road win against an Associated Press Top-25 opponent. BSU, which went 11-2 overall and tied San Diego State and Fresno State at 7-1 in league action, beat the Aztecs, 52-35, in 2011 at Qualcomm Stadium
SDSU concludes its regular season on Nov. 30 at UNLV. San Diego State is 14-8 all-time against the Rebels and has won three straight in the series, including a 24-13 victory in San Diego last year.
The conference championship game will take place on Dec. 7 and will match the winner of the Pacific Division (Aztecs, Fresno State, Hawai'i, Nevada, San Jose State and Nevada) and the Mountain Division (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming) at the highest-ranked division champion in the BCS standings.
SDSU is accepting new account deposits on 2013 season tickets through the Aztec Ticket Office. Fans can purchase tickets through GoAztecs.com, over the phone by calling (619) 283-7378, or by visiting Qualcomm Stadium's Window E between 9 a.m. PT and 5 p.m. PT.
