Annual Green and Gold Spring Game Saturday at Noon

April 18, 2013

FORT COLLINS, Colo.–The Colorado State Rams will bring to a close their 2013 Spring Football season with the annual Green and Gold Spring Game on Saturday at Noon at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. The final day of the 15-practice spring season will feature the traditional pregame pancake breakfast, two-hour game and postgame autographs, all of which are free and open to the public.

GAME DAY: The pancake breakfast begins at 10 a.m. on the west concourse of the stadium. The game kicks off at noon, and will be broadcast on 105.5 FM ESPN Denver. Seating will be in the West stands, and parking is free in select lots where snow removal has been completed.

In addition, season tickets for 2013 will be on sale, and there will be photo opportunities with CAM the Ram and Cheerleaders, a cheer performance and a band performance. Official CSU Rams merchandise will be on sale.

GAME FORMAT: The Green and Gold teams will be selected by the coaching staff to produce rosters that will pit the No. 1 offense vs. the No. 1 defense, and so forth, with regular game scoring. There will be four 12-minute quarters with a running clock, except for the last two minutes of each half, and a 12-minute halftime.

POSTGAME AUTOGRAPHS: Fans are encouraged to come onto the field after the game, where players will be available to sign autographs and interact with fans.

QUARTERBACK COMPETITION: The competition to earn the starting quarterback position is one area of focus in Saturday’s spring game. Junior Garrett Grayson and sophomore Conner Smith, both of whom started multiple games in 2012, have seen equal repetitions throughout the spring. Coach McElwain has continued to include redshirt-freshman Craig Leonard in the conversation surrounding that competition, and will welcome incoming freshman Nick Stevens this summer.

Saturday’s game will give Grayson, Smith and Leonard a chance to shine before entering the next phase of preparation for the 2013 season.

“It’s something we need to see going into the summer,” McElwain said of the play at the quarterback position, both Saturday and over the next three months. “We’ll see who takes control of this team when these guys are out working in the middle of the heat by themselves. I’d like to see which guy steps up and really grabs the whole team by the hand.”

SETTING THE SCENE: The Rams began spring drills on Tuesday, March 26. The team has had two spring scrimmages and an open practice in Denver, among the 13 sessions that have taken place to date. The final tune-up before the Green and Gold Game is scheduled for Thursday from 3:20-5:30 p.m. Fifteen starters return for the Rams in 2013, including four who received All-Mountain West consideration in 2012, from a Colorado State team that won three of its final five games and brings a three-game home winning streak into the 2013 season.

AGGIES TO RAMS: John Hirn, author of Aggies to Rams, will be selling his book at Saturday’s game. Fans interested in purchasing a copy may stop by Hirn’s tent located next to the CSU Bookstore trailer on the south concourse. In a new offer this year, fans who sign up or renew their Ram Club membership with a minimum donation of $100 will receive a $5 discount on the purchase of a copy of Aggies to Rams.
