June 11, 2012

SAN DIEGO - Athlon Sports recently named four San Diego State football players to its 2012 preseason all-Mountain West first and second teams.

Junior tight end Gavin Escobar earned first-team recognition on offense, while senior cornerback Leon McFadden was selected to the defensive first team. Junior wide receiver Colin Lockett, meanwhile, was named to the offensive second team and junior saftey Nat Berhe earned second-team honors on defense.

Escobar, a 2012 Phil Steele Preseason All-MW first-team honoree, is coming off a stellar sophomore campaign on The Mesa. Last season, the Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native reeled in 51 catches for 780 yards and seven touchdowns.

McFadden was also named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-MW first team last month. In 2011, the Inglewood, Calif., native led the league in passes defended (17), while recording 46 tackles (35 solo), two interceptions and a sack.

Lockett joined Escobar and McFadden on Phil Steele's Preseason All-MW first team and also garnered third-team honors as a kick returner. The Diamond Bar, Calif., native led SDSU in receiving with 970 yards and his 74.6 receiving yards per game ranked fourth in the MW. Lockett also tallied 678 yards on special teams, including a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the season opener against Cal Poly.

Berhe, who earned 2012 Preseason All-MW second-team honors from Phil Steele, is coming off a sophomore campaign where he registered career-best marks in tackles (67), tackles for loss (3.5), interceptions (2), pass breakups (5) and forced fumbles (1). The Colton, Calif., native ranked third on the team in tackles and was tied for second in interceptions.
