June 15, 2012

SAN DIEGO - USA Today recently projected the San Diego State football team to finish second in the 2012 Mountain West standings with a 9-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in league play in its College Football Preview magazine.

Senior cornerback Leon McFadden, an Athlon Sports and Phil Steele preseason all-MW first-team honoree as well as a preseason MW Defensive Player of the Year honoree from Lindy's Sports, was tabbed by USA Today as a repeat first-team all-conference selection. In 2011, the Inglewood, Calif., native led the league in passes defended (17), while recording 46 tackles (35 solo), two interceptions and a sack.

Senior wide receiver Brice Butler, meanwhile, was selected by USA Today as the top newcomer for the Aztecs. The Norcross, Ga., native has already been tabbed as a Phil Steele preseason all-MW second-team honoree as well as being ranked in the MW top-10 NFL talent list by Lindy's Sports. Butler, who is a transfer from USC, had 31 catches for 554 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons as a Trojan.

The Aztecs get their 2012 season underway at 7:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 1, at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. USA Today has tabbed SDSU's Nov. 3 matchup at Boise State as one of its top games to watch in the Mountain West.
