FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On Wednesday eight Rams were named to Athlon Sports All-Mountain West teams.

Tight end Crockett Gillmore was named to the second-team offense for the second consecutive year, while on the other side of the ball Shaquil Barrett and Shaq Bell earned spots on the second-team defense.

This is the third preseason accolade for Gillmore, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound senior, who has also been named to Phil Steele’s first-team All-Mountain West squad and earned a spot of CFPA’s 2013 Tight End Trophy watch list.

Barrett, who finished the 2012 season recording 67 tackles and a career-high 7.5 tackles for loss, secured his second preseason nomination. The Baltimore, Md. native was named to Phil Steele’s first-team defense.

Bell, a senior who has played in 36 games for Colorado State and registered over 150 tackles, picked up only his second preseason nomination of his career. The second-team defensive nod from Athlon Sports is his most prolific preseason honor. The 5-foot-11 cornerback racked up a career-best 66 tackles and his first-career sack in 2012.

Running back Donnell Alexander, center Weston Richburg, linebacker Cory James, safety Trent Matthews and kicker Jared Roberts earned third-team recognition.

Alexander, who rushed for 587 yards in 2012, the fifth most by a freshman at CSU, and Matthews earned their first preseason nod.

The Rams’ eight players earning preseason recognition from Athlon Sports is tied for the third most in the Mountain West with Boise State. Only Fresno State (11) and San Jose State (9) have more.
