Escobar Named to the Mackey Award Watch List

July 10, 2012

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Gavin Escobar has been named to the 2012 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List, given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. Escobar is one of just three players from the Mountain West to be a candidate for the award.

Escobar has already earned all-Mountain West first-team offensive honors from Phil Steele, Athlon Sports and Lindy's Sports as well as being named to the tight end trophy watch list by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). Last season, Escobar reeled in 51 catches for 780 yards and seven touchdowns. His 60.00 receiving yards per game in 2011 were third most in the nation among tight ends.

The honor is named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey. Mackey was often regarded as one of the all-time greats to ever have played the tight end position. He competed in the National Football League for 10 years, was elected to the Pro Bowl five times, was a three-time all-NFL Player and was named to the NFL's All-Decade Team and 50th Anniversary squad.

The semifinalists for the Mackey Award will be announced on Nov. 12 and finalists will be named on Nov. 19. The 2012 John Mackey winner will then be presented live on ESPNU on Dec. 6.
