Reed Once Again on Preseason Mackay Watch List

Colorado Springs, Colo. --- For the second straight season, senior tight end Lucas Reed has been named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to the best collegiate tight end. Reed is one of three Mountain West student-athletes on the list, including Colorado State junior Crockett Gillmore and San Diego State junior Gavin Escobar. Reed is one of 33 student-athletes on the preseason watch list.

For the Lobos, it's the second honor in a row, as Dillon Farrell was named to the preseason Rimington Watch List as well for the top center in college football. Farrell is one of five MW student-athletes on the list and one of 51 total.

Hailing from Tucson, Ariz., Reed caught 22 passes for 241 yards during his junior campaign. He started all 12 games for the Lobos in 2011 and finished last season with six multi-catch games. Back in 2010, he was named by the Mackay Foundation as the tight end of the week after a two-touchdown performance in a win over Wyoming.

Named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2012 John Mackey winner will be announced on December 6, 2012.

Presented since 2000, the John Mackey Award lists eleven NFL players as alumni: 2006 Super Bowl Champion Dallas Clark ('01) of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two-time Super Bowl Champion Daniel Graham ('02), Kellen Winslow II ('03) of the Seattle Seahawks, two-time Super Bowl Champion Heath Miller ('04) of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Marcedes Lewis ('05) of the Jacksonville Jaguars, 2008 Super Bowl Champion Matt Spaeth ('06) of the of the Chicago Bears, Fred Davis ('07) of the Washington Redskins, Chase Coffman ('08) of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers, Aaron Hernandez ('09) of the New England Patriots, D.J. Williams ('10) of the Green Bay Packers and the 2011 John Mackey Award recipient Dwayne Allen of the Indianapolis Colts.
