McFadden on Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List

July 12, 2012

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior defensive back Leon McFadden is among 84 players to be named to the 2012 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced today. McFadden is one of just two players from the Mountain West to be a candidate for the award.

McFadden has already earned all-Mountain West first-team defensive honors from Phil Steele, Athlon Sports, and Lindy's Sports as well as being tabbed to the defensive back trophy watch list by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). The senior was also selected as the preseason MW Defensive Player of the Year by Lindy's. In 2011, the Inglewood, Calif., native led the league in passes defended (17), while recording 46 tackles (35 solo), two interceptions and a sack.

McFadden is one of three Aztecs to be named to the preseason Nagurski Watch List since 2006, joining Antwan Applewhite and Miles Burris.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Every NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision conference and independents BYU and Notre Dame are repesented on the list that is divided among linemen, linebackers and defensive backs.

The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 25-man All-America Team before choosing five Bronko Nagurski finalists on Nov. 15. Committee members, by individual ballot, then select the winner who will be announced on Dec. 3 at the annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet.
