Leon McFadden Named to Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

July 13, 2012

OKLAHOMA CITY - San Diego State senior Leon McFadden is one of 35 players named to the 2012 Preseason Watch List for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in college football. McFadden is the first player in school history to be a candidate for the award.

It is the sixth preseason honor for McFadden, who has already earned all-Mountain West first-team defensive honors from Phil Steele, Athlon Sports, and Lindy's Sports as well as being tabbed to both the preseason Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list and the defensive back trophy watch list by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). In 2011, the Inglewood, Calif., native led the league in passes defended (17), while recording 46 tackles (35 solo), two interceptions and a sack.

A screening committee compiles the Jim Thorpe Award watch list by selecting 30-40 players each year. The list is not final, however, as players who have outstanding seasons are added as the year progresses. The Thorpe Award winner is then selected from three finalists with the winner being announced on Dec. 6 at The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The Thorpe Award is named after history's greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe, and is presented by the Jim Thorpe Association in Oklahoma City. Thorpe excelled at every sport in which he competed, including football at which he played on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
