July 13, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Award-winning local announcer Russ Langer has been named the new radio play-by-play voice of UNLV football, IMG College and UNLV Athletics announced Friday.

The seven-time Nevada Sportscaster of the Year is a familiar sound to area fans as he is currently in his 13th season calling games for the Las Vegas 51s professional baseball team, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Langer, who serves as Director of Broadcasting for the Pacific Coast League franchise, will continue his role with the 51s.

At UNLV, he will be joined in the booth by Mike Pritchard who will head into his seventh season this fall as radio game analyst for the program. Langer will also serve as co-host of "The Bobby Hauck Radio Show," which is scheduled to air live from Born And Raised lounge each week during the season.

"We are very pleased to welcome Russ to the Rebel family," said UNLV Director of Athletics Jim Livengood. "IMG College did a thorough search to find a new radio play-by-play voice for our football program and while there were a number of great candidates, ultimately the best option was already on the air right here in Las Vegas. We think Russ and Mike will make a sensational broadcast team."

A native of Southern California, Langer is a graduate of the University of New Mexico. A two-time Minor League Broadcaster of the Year, he was also the New Mexico Sportscaster of the Year in 1999 when he was play-by-play voice of the Albuquerque Dukes. His Major League Baseball broadcasting experience includes more than 40 games for the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox and Montreal Expos.

Langer has also broadcast high school football in four different states over the last two decades, including in Southern Nevada from 2005-08.

"It is a genuine privilege to accept the broadcasting position for Rebel football," Langer said. "UNLV is an important part of the fabric of Las Vegas, and I am deeply honored to become a part of it. My heartfelt thanks go out to the outstanding individuals at IMG and the University who helped to make this possible."
