Escobar on Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List
July 16, 2012
HOUSTON, Texas - San Diego State junior Gavin Escobar is among 145 players named to the preseason watch list for the 2012 Rotary Lombardi Award. Escobar is one of seven from the Mountain West to be a candidate for the award.
It is the sixth preseason honor for Escobar, who has already earned all-Mountain West first-team offensive honors from Phil Steele, Athlon Sports and Lindy's Sports as well as being tabbed to both the preseason John Mackey Award watch list and the tight end trophy watch list by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). Last season, the Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native reeled in 51 catches for 780 yards and seven touchdowns. His 60.00 receiving yards per game in 2011 were third most in the nation among tight ends.
Escobar is the fifth Aztec to be named to the preseason Lombardi Watch list, joining linebackers Miles Burris (2011), Russell Allen (2008) and Kirk Morrison (2003, 2004) as well as offensive lineman Mike Kracalik (2004).
The annual Rotary Lombardi Award honors the top lineman in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Eligibility for the award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.
The candidates earned a place on the official watch list by earning All-American honors last season, by being named to their respective all-conference first team last season as selected by the conference's head coaches, by being projected to be an All-American or first team all-conference player for the coming season, or by nomination approved by the Rotary Lombardi nominations committee.
The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be periodically updated and revised up to the first round of voting to determine the 25 quarterfinalists for 2012. The 43rd Rotary Lombardi Award will be announced on Dec. 5, 2012 at the Hobby Center in Houston, Texas.
