FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State first-year head football coach Tim DeRuyter is set to open up his initial fall camp on Thursday when players report to begin preparations for the 2012 season.
DeRuyter will welcome 102 players on Thursday's report day that consists of team meetings, compliance paperwork along with the team's annual media days.
Then on Friday, Aug. 3, Fresno State holds its first of the NCAA allotted 29 practices before the season opener on Sept. 1 at home against Weber State. All practices during fall camp and throughout the season will be closed to the public and to the media.
However, there will be one opportunity for Bulldog fans to watch Fresno State before it takes the field for its first game. On Saturday, Aug. 11, Fresno State is holding a team scrimmage in Bulldog Stadium from 9:30-11:45 a.m. that will be open to the public.
The first five days of camp is when the Bulldogs go through the NCAA mandated acclimatization period, where the team can't go in full pads for until the fifth practice on Aug. 7.
Of the 102 players reporting to camp Thursday, 25 of them are newcomers, including 17 that signed National Letters of Intent and eight invited walk-ons. Of the 17 signees, two of them - offensive linemen James Le'au and Alex Fifita - signed after National Signing Day and both come from Junior Colleges.
Fresno State returns 15 starters - seven on offense, seven on defense and one on special teams - along with 37 lettermen.
The Bulldogs were voted to finish third in the 2012 Preseason Mountain West Poll behind Boise State and Nevada.
