Camp Notes: Exit To Ely

Aug. 11, 2012

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV football team wrapped up its first week of practice in Las Vegas with a three-hour session at Rebel Park on Saturday morning. The program now packs up and heads four hours north for 11 days of training in the city of Ely, where temperatures are normally at least 20 degrees cooler.

The off-campus portion of the preseason begins with an evening practice Sunday and will end with a team scrimmage on Aug. 22. All practices in Ely, which take place at Broadbent Park in the middle of town, are open to the public.

Head Coach Bobby Hauck had the following to say about his team's first week of practice:

"It was exceedingly hot, so I am proud of our players for fighting through it. They fought through it like champions. We had a really good first day in full-pads today and got in a couple of light tackling drills, which was good for everybody.

Our players were talking about how they can't wait to get on those busses Sunday. The great thing about heading to Ely is that (because of the cooler temperatures) we can practice when we want and go longer and harder. Another positive aspect is the team bonding that will happen over the next week and a half.

I'm encouraged by what we have seen out here but we have to keep working hard because there is a long way to go to be ready to face Minnesota on August 30."
