Football Fall Camp: Week One Recap
Aug. 14, 2012
The Nevada football team completed the first week of fall camp with its first scrimmage on Sunday and head coach Chris Ault giving the team a day off from practice on Monday.
Camp got off to a great start on Aug. 6 with every player passing the “Nevada Run,” which is the Wolf Pack’s grueling strength and conditioning test. The improved overall condition of the team has been noticeable and is a result of changes to the offseason training program administered by Matt Eck, the school’s director of strength and conditioning.
“We changed our winter conditioning and our summer conditioning like we’ve never changed anything before,” Wolf Pack coach Chris Ault told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “The whole idea was to add more competition among our players, whether it was lifting weights, running or doing agility drills. I thought it was important for us.”
Ault was pleased with the team’s productivity during the first week of camp and in the scrimmage on Sunday.
“At this point in camp, we’re not concerned with scrimmage statistics or anything like that,” Ault said. “The big thing for us as coaches is to get a feel for where we are right now. That film we get from the first scrimmage allows us evaluate everything, from each side of the ball to where specific players are at. It allows us to zero in on where we need to get better.”
Among the newcomers who have joined the program this year, freshman tight end Jarred Gipson saw significant time in the scrimmage on Sunday. While many freshmen redshirt their first season at Nevada, Gipson appears to be a candidate to play immediate as a true freshman.
Sophomore quarterback Cody Fajardo was sharp in the Sunday scrimmage and Ault said after the scrimmage that fellow sophomore Devin Combs is taking the lead in the battle for second-string duties over redshirt freshman Tanner Roderick.
The quarterbacks are under the tutelage now of first-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich, a former Hawaii star and San Francisco Bay Area native who was recently profiled by the Marin Independent Journal.
Week two of camp began this week with another set of “double-day” practices on Tuesday.
The Wolf Pack also had a couple of recent roster additions, both to the offensive line as freshman Jacob Henry and sophomore transfer Brent Roling have joined the team this week.
