Lobo Football Team Introduces 'The New Mexico Man'
Aug. 21, 2012
First-year coach Bob Davie has instituted a policy in which a walk-on player will be the designated "New Mexico Man" each week during the 2012 season.
The designated player will lead the team onto the field with the New Mexico state flag before home games as well as before the game at New Mexico State.
That player also will participate on UNM's special teams units during that particular game.
Coach Davie and his staff will select the weekly player who exhibits the dedication, work ethic, team spirit and unselfishness that exemplifies Lobo football and the state of New Mexico.
"Walk-ons are critical to our success here at UNM," Davie said. "I have tremendous respect for all of them and want to have a way to recognize their importance and contributions to the program."
The football team will recognize that player's hometown before each home game.
Jeric Magnant, a sophomore walk-on from Rio Rancho, N.M. (Rio Rancho High School) has been chosen as the New Mexico Man for the Sept. 1 season opener vs. Southern. He also has earned a scholarship this fall, based on the criteria for the award that he displayed - on and off the field during the offseason.
"We are fortunate to have Jeric Magnant in our program at UNM," Davie said. "He exemplifies all the characteristics we are looking for in a New Mexico Man.
"He has earned his scholarship and will serve as a role model for all future walk-ons."
